Windows 10 Is Coming Along Nicely
I’m currently on build 10162 of the Win10 preview on my desktop. I’ve been using it constantly in a virtual machine since the first build but I’ve been using it sparingly on real hardware because it wasn’t stable enough for me. That now seems to have changed. I’ll be using Win10 as my main desktop so that I can learn what there is to learn about it.
One thing I can tell you here and now is that if you’re a tweaker who values your privacy you’ll have some work to do setting up Win10. The default is basically to share all you’ve got with everything and everyone. It even wants to share your wifi passwords with your contacts.
Although I did a Win10 clean install on this computer a few weeks ago I put my Windows 8.1 image back on because Win10 was so buggy. This time I did an upgrade (extract iso image and click setup.exe). The only problem I’m having at the moment is bridged networking in VMware Player (Win10 host) (I do the majority of my internet activities in one of my Linux VM’s).
Anywho, Microsoft has put out a lot of Win10 info this week. Here are the links:

Get Windows 10 – More Info
This morning I had a new Windows Logo icon in the Notification Area. It was the GWX update at work.
See below for full pics.
Additionally, Microsoft has posted a Win10 FAQ:
“Microsoft is making Windows 10 available as free upgrade for qualified Windows 7, Windows 8.1, and Windows Phone 8.1 devices. It will be available starting July 29, 2015; people can reserve their free upgrade today.
You only have until July 29, 2016 to take advantage of this offer. Once you upgrade, you have Windows 10 for free on that device.”
FYI on a Win10 Tweak Guide
Yes, there will be a guide.
Release date unknown. Certainly not before mid-August and quite probably early September. This is a big release and I will be taking my time with it.
Given the current condition/quality of Win10 I’m not even sure I’ll be recommending the upgrade before years end. I don’t consider Win10 in beta stage yet.
They have a LOT of work to do.
Win10 In July?
Neowin is reporting that the AMD CEO said something like that:
“According to AMD’s CEO Microsoft is looking to launch Windows 10 at the end of July.
The AMD exec was speaking on a recent financial conference call when she let slip the fact that Microsoft was looking to get the OS out in time for the “back to school” promotions.”
Source: Neowin
I’m highly skeptical that MS could pull this off. IMHO Win10 thus far has been buggy.
Sounds to me like an exec trying to tell investors that happy days are right around the corner.
Still, it is interesting.
