Announcing Windows Vista SP1 Release Candidate (RC)
Today we’re making available the release candidate (RC) of Windows Vista SP1 via Microsoft Connect, and tomorrow subscribers to TechNet and MDSN will have access to those RC bits too. In addition, the RC will be available to the public next week via Microsoft’s Download Center. The release candidate phase of beta software is typically the final phase before the RTM (release-to-manufacturing) of a product and indicates that the code has attained a significant level of performance and stability.

Reader ‘hsantos’ asked: “Any recommendation for a mp3 player… other than Winamp… less memory hungry?”
Winamp isn’t “memory hungry” if you do a minimal install…

Vista Multiple-GPU Hotfix v.2.0
In some scenarios, games and benchmarks perform more poorly than expected on a Windows Vista-based computer. This issue occurs when the games and the benchmarks use multiple display adapters in a Linked Display Adapter (LDA) configuration.

All about Linux swap space
When your computer needs to run programs that are bigger than your available physical memory, most modern operating systems use a technique called swapping, in which chunks of memory are temporarily stored on the hard disk while other data is moved into physical memory space. Here are some techniques that may help you better manage swapping on Linux systems and get the best performance from the Linux swapping subsystem.

Random Musings (12/02/2007)
It’s that time of year for tech articles, the lame “gift guides” continue to pour out. Next up, the super-lame “year-in-review” articles.
A reader asked why I’m only running a Pentium 4 computer. Well, my laptop is a Core 2 Duo and I’m still making payments on it. Gotta pay that off before I get something else.
Speaking of readers. Some of you guys continue to make great comments and contributions, even if (actually, especially if) we disagree. Thank you, it makes doing this fun.
I’m constantly getting asked to link to this-or-that website. So, I’m gonna put up an affiliates list. The qualifications are:
-You must have been on the web for at least 1 (one) year (I don’t care what kind of traffic you get). Sorry to you new guys but I’ve seen too many sites come and go.
-You must have an affiliates list on your front page (and listed prominently). Not a separate page.
-You must post news from other sites on your front page (and listed prominently), complete with an article synopsis. The format should be either in blog form or an a format like Warp2Search, [H]ardOCP, etc.
-No ‘adult’ content (that includes links).
I’m amazed at the number of people that have switched back to XP! (see the poll —->)
Firefox 2.0.0.11 Has Hit The Mirrors

Not “official” and no release notes yet.
This is a bug fix.

All others available here. (change the link in the next page to ‘2.0.0.11’)
Leopard is the New Vista…
I’m not sure what ticks me off more about Leoptard…: the fact that so many of the semi-important changes don’t work, the fact that Apple turned a stable OS into a crash-happy glitz fest, or that the annoying, scruffy Live Free or Die Hard actor infecting my TV is pretending that Leopard is better than Vista. It’s not better than Vista. Leopard is Vista. And Tiger is better than both of them!
Awww, Apple boys are upset. Isn’t that a shame???

Defending Windows Vista
Windows Vista’s biggest fans Ed Bott & Paul Thurrott are defending Vista, again:

I like and respect these 2 guys. They don’t know me from Adam and I’m sure these 2 don’t care about the opinion of a peon like me but…
Sorry guys but the reason people think Vista is slower than XP is because it is. I’ve run them side-by-side on 4 different machines in my home and in every instance you can see and feel the difference. The more powerful the machine the less performance difference I have seen. I should note that some of the hotfixes for Vista have made a big difference. Some still argue that much of this may be driver issues and FWIW I agree to a point. But, It really doesn’t make any difference does it? All you and I care about is how it runs on our machine.
I would like to know what you think, and please vote in the new poll.
