All about Linux swap space

December 4, 2007, 19:25(EST) By Eric (a.k.a. TweakHound)

When your computer needs to run programs that are bigger than your available physical memory, most modern operating systems use a technique called swapping, in which chunks of memory are temporarily stored on the hard disk while other data is moved into physical memory space. Here are some techniques that may help you better manage swapping on Linux systems and get the best performance from the Linux swapping subsystem.

Fedora 8 Is Out

November 8, 2007, 15:01(EST) By Eric (a.k.a. TweakHound)

Codenamed “Werewolf”, hehe that beats “Feisty Fawn” any day! 😎
Article with more info at Arstechnica.
Download links, reviews, etc. at Distrowatch.

I’m downloading now, about 1/2 an hour left. I’ll attempt an install shortly.
If you have any good links for Fedora 8, please post them.

*edit
I attempted an install on my main rig (several times, using several methods). The install always freezes right after ‘keyboard selection’. I’ve neither the time nor desire to do this on one of my other machines. Bye, bye Fedora, and, bite me Werewolf…

Upgrading to Ubuntu 7.10 now, before the rush

October 15, 2007, 17:28(EDT) By Eric (a.k.a. TweakHound)

I usually don’t upgrade an OS but I saw this on Digg and figured I would give it a shot, just for the heck of it.

When Ubuntu’s Gutsy Gibbon (7.10) is released on Thrusday there will be a mad rush to download updates and ISOs from Ubuntu’s servers. This article will explain various ways to upgrade to the latest and greatest by avoiding to download rush.

Good openSUSE 10.3 Articles

October 11, 2007, 17:32(EDT) By Eric (a.k.a. TweakHound)

A few good articles coming out now for openSUSE 10.3:
The Perfect Desktop – OpenSUSE 10.3 (GNOME)
openSUSE 10.3: AMD/ATI Drivers Installation

Upgrading to openSUSE 10.3

Hacking openSUSE 10.3

October 9, 2007, 13:45(EDT) By Eric (a.k.a. TweakHound)

Novell’s openSUSE 10.3 is an exciting desktop operating environment that includes or supports nearly every program you need for work and play. But there are those last few programs and issues that make openSUSE just short of perfect. Web browser plugins for some kinds of online content; Windows Media and DVD movie playback support; and drivers for Atheros wireless devices and Nvidia and ATI video cards are the chief things holding openSUSE back for some users. This guide will help you remove as many of those barriers as possible.
