My Dad Passed Away This Morning

My Dad passed away this morning. His battle with mixed Alzheimer’s and vascular dementia is mercifully over. I slept next to his bed the last 2 nights and I was holding his hand when he passed.
He never got over missing my Mom. She was truly the light of his life and he was lost without her.

His wishes:
– No funeral, no fuss.
– Like my Mom, have a simple cremation and have his ashes buried next to her.
He had stated, “Don’t tell no one until I’m dead and buried.”
(That’s a little much as cremations do not happen immediately.)

Location of ashes:
Blue Ridge Parkway
South of the Blue Ridge Parkway North Entrance
and north of Wintergreen Resort

I’m not sure when I will be able to put his ashes there as the road is often closed in the winter.

We are saddened but also relieved.

    I am very sorry for your loss. It was obvious from your posts here that you did an incredible job under very difficult circumstances. I’d like to think that your Mom & Dad are looking down from heaven, saying “Job well done.”

    My Friend: As I reflect on losing my wife back in ’97 + your loss, let me try to help you get thru this…….Be thankful for the time you had and not angry for what you lost…..yes, he suffers no more and for that your family is truly grateful. Reflect on the good times, the wonderful memories, the laughter, his smile, but most of all reflect on the LOVE you two shared!!! The sacrifices you made prove how wonderful of a son you were/are. God has Blessed both of us!!! God Blessed your Dad with YOU!!!!!!!!!

    Condolences for you and your wife. My Dad passed away just about nine years ago and it gets ‘better’ with age but you always remember and miss him when they are gone. Rest in Peace.

    What a beautiful couple they was!! And true love i guess. I hate how cruel it’s the time with us and the ones we love. Youre father’s last wishes after dead it’s gonna be mines, totally agree very wise. I’ll send you all the strength to you and your family.

    Hi Eric,

    I lost my father last year, he had a number of health problems but his death was quick and there was no sign he was in pain for long. That’s the best any of us can hope for our loved ones.

    I am so sorry about your father. The first year will be the toughest as you adjust to holidays but it will get better. You will start to be able to talk freely about him with family and laugh about all the good times. I wish you and your family the best, you were a great son to take care of him until the end.

    I’m so terribly sorry for your loss. You loved your Dad so much. And you were there for him as long as he needed you. Your photos are very endearing. A 19th Century poet Christina Rossetti wrote “When I come to the end of the road and the sun has set for me, I want no rites in a gloom filled room. Why cry for a soul set free?” My heart goes out to you and your family. May God bless and give you comfort.

    Losing a parent knocks a big hole in your life. My parents and in-laws died in a two year period almost 10 years ago, so I feel for you and offer my condolences.

    Wow your parents were beautiful, sorry for your loss. They seem to have lived a good life, from my judgement way better then todays generation.
