Rolling Stone – Mickey Gilley, Country Music’s Urban Cowboy, Dead at 86
“Mickey Gilley, the smooth-voiced, piano-playing country crooner who helped popularize the “Urban Cowboy” movement of the Eighties, died Saturday in Branson, Missouri. He was 86.”
I saw Mickey perform a couple of times but I met him in the early eighties (82 or 83). In high school I worked as a bagger/stocker at Kessel Food Market in Saginaw, Michigan. I was out collecting shopping karts and a tour bus rolled up to the hotel next door. I meandered over and saw that it was Mickey Gilley’s bus. I knocked on the door and asked the guy at the door for Mickey’s autograph. From the back I heard, “Bring that boy here.” It was Mickey, we had a brief chat and I left with an autographed 8×10. It is the only time I’ve ever asked anyone for an autograph. The picture has been lost through my many moves over the years.
