In my search for a phone, several folks are recommending iPhones…
I’ve never been an Apple fan. Here is my famous/infamous Mac Rant from 2003.
I could get over the fact that the patron saint of Apple was a… let’s just say he was… highly, highly flawed. The great Woz almost makes up for him.
I could get over the many issues the world seems to have with Apple because so much of it applies to the entire tech sector.
I could get over the carnage and mayhem that iTunes used to cause on Windows machines.
I could get over the premium price you pay for the privilege of owning an Apple device.
I could get over the superior attitude that so many Apple users have, except while being bullied on the school bus, my niece was abused for having an Android.
You see, that, THAT is just exactly it. For so many Apple users the machine defines them. They think it makes them better, cooler, more perfect, above.
And me, I’m just not cool enough.

I absolutely agree with you on this

Couldn’t agree with you more. To Apple disciples Apple can do no wrong, yet MS is pilloried if they do the same.
Style and cachet over substance

Recently my wife and I replaced our old cells with Samsung S21 5G. Not a super fancy phone, but one that does everything we want!! Take a look at the new Samsung 21 lineup, Eric.

S21 FE due out in January, S22’s are rumored to be coming in February. There are possibilities there.

iTunes is no more needed to have an iPhone. I’m a tech guy. Been a tech for over 30 years. I always choose and recommend the best device regarding of the brand. I don’t recommend MacBook for this reason. Premium Android device are also expensive. iPhone broke less then android device and are easier and safer for most people.

As for hardware quality, I’ve had the Droid, Droid Razr Maxx HD, and Galaxy S7. All of them are still 100% working phones. No other metric matters to me.
Yep, phones are stupid expensive.

I am in agreement that Apple users are as much part of the problem as the bloated prices & restrictive practices are. However last year I broke down & purchased an Apple IPhone 11 for my wife & started using my late sisters IPhone 6+. Primarily because of the Privacy issues on Android I am committed to Apple Phones & will be buying myself an IPhone 13 for myself.
I remain with 4 Windows PCs but may get my wife an IPad eventually but will stick with Windows for the foreseeable future due to the privacy issue and I do enjoy using the IPhone’s.
Good Luck with you search & do enjoy your website.

Yup… 100%.
I was totally in love with Apple when I was a kid and got my Apple II in 1980. Was doing co-op in 84 when the original Mac came on the scene and that was cool, but didn’t like that they went all proprietary and closed-in after their experiences with clones of the Apple II series. But the IBM XT was crap and it wasn’t until I got my hands on an Intel 286 PC AT (the clones and openness that follows) that the tide shifted from Apple for me. Then much later when Apple almost went belly up, came back and turned into the “snobiness” factor starting with the iPods that I started to have a real disdain for Apple… then the iPhone came out and that sealed it for me, utter hatred for Apple.
Never forget 2 incidents that sealed my anti-Apple attitude:
1) Co-worker that came to xmas lunch party in the mid 2000s with the new iPhone when it first came out and parading it around to everyone at the party to show how cool it (and he) was. His app of choice to show it off… a graphic of a lighter that when you rotated the phone, the flame bent and stayed upright… to all the “ooohs and ahhhs” of onlookers. I rolled my eyes, grabbed a buddy’s lighter (real one), flicked it open, lit it and twisted it around going “oooh…ahhhh… and I didn’t have to spend several hundred bucks”.
2) Again mid-2000s, go out to the bars and all the sales/corporate D-Bags that would show up, sit at the bar and purposely throw their iPhones on the bar next to their cocktail drinks as a status symbol for the chicks (and to look down on all the other dudes).
Geesh… makes my skin crawl even recalling all that… 😛

Oh…and forgot to add… I picked up a Samsung A17 last year and just LOVE it. Had upgraded from my old Samsung S4, I don’t upgrade phones that often and only upgraded because the old version of Android on the S4 was incompatible with some of the apps I wanted to use (and I don’t use a lot of apps anyway).
With ya on a previous comment you had mentioned about Samsung’s “bloatware”. On my S4, I had blown away the stock image and replaced it with a custom one, unlocked, rooted, etc. But for the A17, I just left it stock and it’s actually been fine in that regard IMO…

You know, I used to think like you for many years. Never used Apple products. Hung out on my Windows machines and Android phones. And then I bit the bullet and bought the M1 MacBook Air. Been using that computer for a year and my mind is blown! It runs fast yet stays cool. No fan driving me crazy. MacOS is just a pleasure to use over Windows. I get The hype now. I don’t think I can go back to Windows.

No one mentions Louis Rossmann, the premier Macbook/iPhone repair shop in NYC? Rossmann personally uses Motorola (Lenovo) phone and Windows.notebooks. Has numerous videos of the wonders of Macbook/Apple engineering.
