Several days ago I said “Not interested” to the pre-Alpha Windows 11. It has now moved to the Beta channel which hopefully means its is at least Alpha grade and I was a little bored so I installed it.
I had to jump through some hoops…
Convert to GPT
My OS drive was MBR and had to be converted to GPT so full UEFI features could be available. This would have involved reinstalling the OS in previous versions of Windows but in Win10 it took 2 minutes. How I did it below. Back your friggin’ disk up with a disk image before you start. If you hose your OS and don’t have a backup I’ll just laugh.
Microsoft – MBR2GPT.EXE
***Your disk MUST HAVE an EFI partition.
Reboot to a command prompt: Settings > Update and Security > Recovery > Advanced startup > Restart now…
Then: Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Command Prompt > type: mbr2gpt /convert > reboot
Join the Windows Insider program Beta Channel
I had to turn telemetry back on (0 to 3):
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\DataCollection]
“AllowTelemetry”=dword:00000003
If you have to do more just use O&O ShutUp10.
Settings > Update and Security > Windows Insider Program > Get Started button
choose the Beta Channel > restart and check for updates.
My opinion of Windows 11 after 2 hours….
Taskbar is all screwed up and not customizable
Start10 doesn’t start but if you hit the Windows key it comes up
Explorer looks better
Networking is snappier
The widgets suck, the location is off, and if you set it it will reset after you clear browser history.
So far Windows 11 seems to give nothing special, takes away customization, and IMHO is harder to use. I’m not getting the point.

My old Asus Hero VII does not have a TPM, but it has a connection for a module. Not sure if a module supports TPM 2.0 though and may be a tough find. If video cards weren’t so darn expensive….

I have tried it on two different setups and both times rolled back to windows 10. It is so slow and cumbersome and imposes so many layers of protection for novice users that it for the most part it is like watching paint dry. I simply don’t have time for that. Thank god I had multiple backups and images so that the rollback put both machines back exactly where they were. Not sure I will make this conversion anytime in the near future until there is a way to turn off all the overhead they added.
