Win10 To Improve?
2 stories caught my eye today:
Microsoft To Provide Additional Windows Update Installation Options With Creators Update
and
Microsoft is working on a ‘Game Mode’ for Windows 10
The update thingy sounds like MS will put a button in to enable this tweak.
The Game Mode thingy is interesting but no details. Coincidentally, I’ve been considering a Game Only tweak guide.
Would anyone out there be interested?
The Tweaker
This is the best Steve Jobs article I have seen.
I’ve never been a fan of SJ so I’m not quite sure how I feel about the articles title.

IMHO this article doesn’t even scratch the surface.

Being I do a lot of gaming, I’d be interested in a guide.

Hello,
Really curious about what you would put into a gaming guide, Eric.
When I tweak my own machines for gaming, I usually do the following:
OS tweaks:
– Make sure it’s clean and with everything (drivers etc) updated
– Screen : native resolution, refresh rate max.
– Mouse : 6/11 with Enhance precision unticked to disable mouse acceleration
– Windows Power plan : High performance
– System : DEP enabled for all programs, machine renamed
– when I use W10, I disable most telemetry/windows store stuff, especially the XBOX app and it’s DVR recording
– games installed on SSD, data on HDD
Display drivers:
– Power management : maximum performances
– Max. Prerendered frames : 1 (input lag reasons)
Game tweaks:
– VSYNC off to reduce input lag
– FPS capped to reduce GPU stress
– shadows low or disabled
– … then researching performance guides for the game I’m playing.
It takes me around 5-10 minutes and most of this is common sense. I’m really looking forward to see what you have to say and write about a gaming guide, I’m sure I will learn some things I don’t know.

Basically I am looking at my Win10 Tweak Guide plus stripping everything down to bare minimum.

Yea, i was about to ask how extensive you were considering to take it. The way you lay out your guides makes it easy to determine how aggressive one should tweak and/or strip. Any further than that you’d have to get into video card settings, either as general recommendations or break it down specifically for each game.
Razer Cortex attempts to strip down resources to bare minimum, but for me it didn’t strip enough resources to justify using it….and oddly enough it made my games randomly drop fps.

I’m not going to get in to hardware tweaking. Other guides have attempted it and come up short. Lets just take video cards. Tweaking at that level needs to get down to settings on a specific card and even a specific card on a specific motherboard/chipset. To do it properly would require tens of thousands of dollars in hardware and dozens of individuals to get it right.
