Win10 AnniUpdate Woes
I gotta tell ya, I’m not a fan of the Win10 AnniUpdate. Less so by the day.
For many (including myself) the entire Win10 AnniUpdate experience seems to be a PITA…
– “Rolling Out”. You’ll get in when you get it. Maybe. This is a Win10 thing. That never happened previously. When a Service Pack was released, everyone got it. Also, ever since the AnniUpdate when updates do appear they have often been slow to download. So slow it often appears that Windows Update is frozen.
– It reinstalled apps you had uninstalled.
– Group policy settings removed.
– Power Shell broken.
– It has major hardware issues that still are not fixed as of this writing. Folks reporting broken webcams, mice acting strangely, “broken” or unbootable computers, and “freezing”. On my main rig (7/10 dual-boot) I get sporadic mini-freezes resulting in Win10 being utterly unusable. And no, I’m not going to try fixing it. Microsoft broke it, they can fix it. I’m happily using Windows 7 and doing my internet stuff in an openSUSE VM.
Win10 has more Alpha and Beta testers than ever and Microsoft just can’t seem to get things right. What is the point of the Insider Program if it doesn’t help detect problems before release?
DarkAudacity
There is now a dark version of Audacity. Windows only unfortunately. Check out the DarkAudacity website to get all the info and differences.
Bleachbit
The program I use as a “CCleaner like” app in Linux is in the news. Apparently a certain Presidential candidate’s IT staff used it to wipe info.
The folks at Bleachbit are rather proud of the attention they are getting.
(NOTE – As the “About Comments” note states, “NO POLITICS”. I will delete any political comments. Take it somewhere else.)

Mini-Issues, (annoyances) with Anni-Update………SO FAR: removed all Content Menu of anything NON MS; stopped Cortana in GPE; updated all drivers in Device Manager, even though no exclamation marks appeared (found two that updated); Opera instead of Edge; Tweakhound Windows 10 .reg tweaks still work; Panda instead of Windows Defender (however, went back to Windows Firewall from Comodo). The only persistent issue is mouse……sometimes it won’t work! My workaround is Ctrl + Alt + Del, Switch User, and sign myself back in. Mouse function returns and I haven’t lost the page I was at when it quit! Anyone have further adjustments to this OS?

Yesterday same thing happened to me with Windows Update. I tried to install like 3 times but not only it got frozen in the middle of download but also it stopped my internet connection everytime. Tried to fresh install Windows 10 but no avail. Finally got fed up and went back to Windows 8.1.

Frankly this is the last Windows installation for me. I’ve just about completely moved all my computing to Linux. I grow quite weary of spending more time on Windows trying to secure privacy and anonymity, than I do actually running software. I will say however, the Anniversary update ran perfectly smooth for me; without any hardware/driver issues…etc. However, as usual, I needed to go back and work on privacy settings, some of which were over-ridden by the update, and some were not. None the less, you need to take the time and effort to check everything, and reinstate what was over-ridden by the update itself; a waste of time.
I’ve been using Debian for several years now, and can do around 98% of my work on it. If I were more fluent using GIMP vs Photoshop, I would already have made the move. It comes to me as quite a shame what Microsoft has come to. It’s also becoming quite clear why Win10 is free (but not really when considering the cost of your privacy).
Linux has come a long way over the years. I have chosen to use Debian over the long haul despite some of it’s frustrations, and would not encourage a novice or user new to Linux to use Debian. Rather something a bit more user-friendly such as Linux Mint would be more suitable for a new Linux User.
I’ve been reading this site for many years now, probably since Win XP. This is the only time I’ve ever left a comment, and I have done so to encourage people to consider using Linux in a virtual machine so as to get used to it; it’s not really all that hard to use this day and age. The day is soon coming where Microsoft Windows will be as damaging to you and your computing experience as any piece of the foulest malware. This is only my opinion, but a fairly experienced one. Adieu.
