I’ve got a new poll up in the right sidebar.
“What is your opinion of the Windows 10 Anniversary Update?”
Please vote.
I stopped using polls because either they don’t support WordPress caching, or caching doesn’t support the widget, or something like that.
Anyhow we will see how it goes. It is more important to me that the site is fast for you than to have the polls.

Build 14393…..Downloaded Media Creation Tool and did clean install. Had (have??) issue with Logitech mouse (arrow moved, but (L) or (R) clicks did not work), even with new batteries: Caused W10 to freeze, which required reboot. Turned Monitor power-off to Never and SO FAR, mouse is working great. Did your tweaks for W10 cause this issue?? Those .reg changes are still in effect. Cloned my C:\ to back up SDD (remember, I have duplicate SDD’s which I clone to…..I can quickly switch out if I SCREW something up!!). Opera still kicks ass, even tho I tried Edge for several months. Not using Edge or Cortana!!
Keep up the GREAT work you are doing, Eric: Most of us have no clue!!!!!!

I voted negative, sadly. Everything started with being forced to reset some LAN connections as updated Windows couldn’t deal with them at all. New Start is as ridiculous as whole two “light” and “dark” themes without being able to choose arbitrary colour. Because white/black gives best contrast which is nice for phones/tablets so it must be great for working on PCs, right? In previous systems anyone could force showing list of all programs if it was needed – but right now I’m forced to have a big part of my Start menu as a completely useless (for me) list of programs. And all useful links on the left side are compressed to small icons (which I can expand but it requires another click on icon – why?).
There is a bit of interface polishing but I can’t comprehend what kind of amateur is responsible for shaping interface of W10. It’s painful to see programmers behind W10 working nicely and making this OS best Windows so far (and making such nice things as native bash) and at the same time interface is made by people probably forcing their strange ideas. I can’t understand why there are so few ways to configure interface.
Maybe I’m exaggerating this but apart from bash (which is an independent project and shouldn’t really be considered as part of this update) and small improvements of Task View (which is still a large unused potential, it could easily be on the same level as Dexpot of Linux equivalents but is still underdeveloped) there is nothing useful for me as some things are disabled in my country (Cortana), some are useless for me (phone integration etc) and some I will never use (Edge).
In the end – if there is really nothing nice for me and just a bunch of irritating stuff, it’s negative for me.

I did clean install and still have random freezes, problems with security software like HitmanPro, problems with settings default system apps an example setting Slimjet to be my default browser, Edge dont like it 🙂

I tried to install the Window 10 Anniversary update on 2 different computers, one running Windows 10 home and the other pro. I tried the updated by going to the Microsoft page to download Windows Anniversary Edition. Both systems failed to install the update with the same error message — Windows ran into a problem. I tried the update 3 times on both computers and it failed each time. I tried all of the suggested fixes including running sfc /scannow, turned off anti-virus, and a couple of other things and nothing worked. I guess I will just wait until Microsoft works out the problems with this edition installing correctly on a wider variety of systems.

Unimpressed. Seems slower, more obfuscated instructions and ways to invade privacy, plus installation can be difficult.

F/U to my first comment: Freezes continued. I tried various remedies and discovered (at least for now) Classic Shell might have been the culprit. Downloaded their latest, v 4.3.0 and SO FAR (knocking on my noggin) no more freezes……F/U to this F/U will be F/U’d!!

Downloaded the Media Creation Tool and ran the update. Slow but went well except it barfed my PeaZip installation. Reinstalled PeaZip and all was good. Most of my privacy tweaks stayed, but the Lock Screen returned. Eventually I found a hack for that, so as far as I know all is now how I want it.

Just updated the DeskTop as above with no errors other than the PeaZip being barfed.

I’m with Dan above, Download .iso, create flash drive with “Rufus” and 4 out of 4 went perfect; from 1 clean install to just upgrade. I don’t know if this may be a factor but my first order of business on all my PC’s is to install “ClassicShell” and ditch that awful and very busy Start Menu.

I’ve looked every where (except where I needed to look) and can’t discover how to get the clock back to the right of the notifications icon (where it should be!) in the system tray. Only suggestion I have found so far from microsoft is to disable notifications … duh!
