Oh man, Couputerworld – Microsoft sets stage for massive Windows 10 upgrade strategy
I’ve covered the GWX issue a lot here at TweakHound. For the life of me I cannot understand why currently approx 20% of folks in the current poll here say they trust Microsoft. Microsoft’s behavior and stunning arrogance is baffling. Ditto the reaction of Microsoft defenders. Can you imagine the outcry by these same people if Apple pulled this crap?

Microsoft should be transparent and tell us what they are doing to our computers and give us a choice ahead of time. WE OWN THE HARDWARE AND SOFTWARE, MICROSOFT DOES NOT. It is like taking a car to the garage and they tell you that they just installed a new engine without your permission. What arrogance and blatant disrespect for all of us! This is not the way to gain market share. You make a good product that will eventually be adopted by the satisfied users. You don’t force beta software on unsuspecting guinea pigs that will cause them nothing but endless grief. Will MS pay for broken systems and downtime? Not likely.
A “wonderful” example is that MS used my PC as a server to redistribute their updates without my permission so that they can lighten their load.
Why would I for. ex. want Win 10 on my 8 year-old PC? It was already running slow with Win 7. The hardware on that PC is just simply not designed to be run on Win 10.

I checked “Yes” in your poll some time ago when you released your privacy guide for Windows 10. I understood this question maybe in a wrong way, something like: “do you think your data collected by W10 will be used only by Microsoft (in a way they told us) or MS is going to do some nasty things with that (sell, use for ads, provide to other companies etc.)”
I think someone in MS had “genius” idea and thought it will be great to have millions of betatesters and they don’t really want to collect data and make money from it. Information about what is collected and sent is vague (and I understand perfectly it speaks against MS in that case) but I still haven’t seen real proofs that the crime is being committed. I give MS right of presumption of innocence, for now.
All these things are separated, for me, from the current GWX storm. It seems like there is a lack of strong leader inside MS right now. Just look at problems with TH2 iso – we have proper media creation tool despite of information coming from MS that Windows Update is going to be the only way to obtain it. It looks like Windows 10 branch of MS is in a chaos and a lot of crazy plans are being executed. Am I going to defend MS in that case? Hell no! Calling these actions “stupid” would be an euphemism. People responsible for both GWX and W10 data collection are practically destroying public image of company. MS will be associated for years with unclear actions, forcing people to do what company wants and so on. I don’t like this situation but as a simple user of Windows I can only watch as MS destroys itself with ridiculous moves.

Well said.

Hipnotyzer: The main issue is that MS collects all the data it wants. It’s a moot point what, when, if and how they will use it. When you say “I give MS right of presumption of innocence, for now”, do you have the proof for your assertion?

My last reply was lost due to comments problems, I will write just a summary.
Yes, MS collects data but we can still disable it (as shown in tests on internet and even one on this site https://www.tweakhound.com/2015/09/29/looking-at-windows-10-privacy/ – I know about disclaimers in text) so I wouldn’t say it looks like malicious activity or activity with such intent. I still think it’s just a stupid idea of some people without a strict boss over them. And without proof of criminal activity of MS (selling data etc.) I won’t condemn them – this is how presumption of innocence works.
I don’t want to participate in this program, call me cautious, as I don’t like idea of having potentially important data stored somewhere (and I don’t know what is stored where). And what is even more important for me in that specific case – I don’t like having background processes slowing down PC and internet connection.
