XP Tweaking Guide Notes & FAQ’s
Where have you gotten all this information?
Most of the information has come from searching the web and in particular microsoft.com. The best tool anyone could use is Google’s advanced search. Many of my favorite links can be found at the Windows XP section of this site. In addition, I’ve found the following documents to contain a wealth of useful information…
Sites:
Kernel Enhancements for Windows XP
Evaluating Memory and Cache Usage
Windows XP: Kernel Improvements Create a More Robust, Powerful, and Scalable OS
Various articles by Mark Russinovich at winnetmag.com
Many more which can be found in the Windows XP section of this site.
Books:
Windows Internals by Mark Russinovich and David Solomon
Microsoft Windows XP Registry Guide by Jerry Honeycutt
Microsoft Windows XP Inside Out Deluxe, by Bott, Siechert, & Stinson
(I’ve got the 1st edition)
What tools do you use to test and benchmark?
(note – I only use benchmarks to monitor the changes within the same machine not between machines.)
Acronis True Image ( the most important tool I use!)
Performance Monitor (see Evaluating Memory and Cache Usage)
Regmon
Regworks
I asked you for help, why won’t you answer?
I get several dozen emails each week asking for tech support. Not to sound too flippant but, in the first place, I get paid to do that. Secondly, if I tried to answer every call for tech support that is all I’d be doing. There are links all over my site for where to find answers and help.
