Mandrake Linux 9.1 - Another Step Forward Page 3 First Contact WOW! You've come a long way baby! The new KDE interface is stunning. Mandrake 9.1 has a clean and polished look. Everything about it seems to have been refined. The theme is professional looking, the toolbar smoother, and the icons have lost much of the unfinished look they had before. Even as you go deeper into the menus and programs you notice a big difference. Click on the image below to walk you through some screens. Updates After poking around for a while it was time to get updates. Since I'm a member of the Mandrake Club I get an awesome selection of mirrors to download from. These mirrors are easily added through a process called urpmi. 3rd party download sites are also easily added using this method. Digging Deeper Mandrake Linux 9.1 comes with a ton of applications. Almost everything you could ever need is included. Applications for graphics, sound, office, games, and video are included (except dvd, more on that later). It would take a medium sized novel to cover all of them. I'll show you some of the main applications and some of my favorites. For browsing my files and networking I like Konqueror, the default browser for the KDE desktop. For surfing the web I use Mozilla and I use its built in mail client too. 9.1 includes OpenOffice and KOffice. I prefer OpenOffice and it has everything most people will ever need from MS Office...at none of the price! So you like your music? As I discovered with 9.0, music sounds much better in Mandrake than in Windows. While watching DVD's is...uh...um...lets just say you'll have to download the program elsewhere. I like Ogle. There are several CD burning apps for 9.1. My current favorite is eroaster. I haven't found a good app for DVD burning. Can anyone suggest one? Here is a cool little program for automatically changing wallpapers. I'd show you my real wallpapers but then I'd have to check ID's Here is the "Control Panel" for Mandrake Linux 9.1, the Mandrake Control Center. You won't find an easier application to configure and maintain an operating system anywhere. Click on the picture below to walk you through it. |
