If that is what you see then you should wait to upgrade. Sooner or later all packages will get updated. I see you managed to find a solution that worked for you via the openSUSE forums.

Hello Eric!
I'm very interested, how you updated your KDE to 4.7.3. Adding those 2 Upstream Repository (both Core and Extra), then starting Online Update, vendor changing Core and Extra, red packages will appear (networkmanager, oxygen-gtk, ... ). Those packages are older, than OpenSuse 12.1 DVD ships? Freshly installed 12.1 x64 Hungarian.

See this picture:

Sorry for the short response. Amongst many Linux users the Gnome/KDE battle often reminds me of the Mac/Win debates which is tiresome.
openSUSE 12.1 has the following major desktops:
KDE 4 (default)
Gnome 3
XFCE
LXDE
KDE 3 (not on DVD/CD and not officially supported)

I use KDE 4 as my main desktop on my laptop and main computer.
I use KDE 3 (with KDE 4 installed) under openSUSE 11.4 on my multimedia box.

I do not use Gnome because it doesn't feel right to me. I don't like the layout, the menu system, heck just about everything.
I guess it is more personal preference than anything. (google, linus torvalds gnome 3 to see the arguments over gnome 3)

I have only tried LXDE once and it was a little sparse for me.

XFCE is lightning fast and a great alternative desktop for low-end hardware or folks who don't need fluff.

KDE 3 is still a good desktop. For openSUSE there are some folks that maintain it independently. For Ubuntu and Fedora and some others check out Trinity Desktop.

In the end which OS, distro, version, and desktop to use is a highly personal choice.

I put in the caveat "Please keep in mind that I do not use and have no interest in any other desktop than KDE." because the articles and instructions I write are done in the KDE desktop and users of other desktops could be confused by them.
